Why choose BBO Teaching Qualifications?

  • Our qualifications are not syllabi specific, which means students can study any or all of our qualifications regardless of the dance genre or syllabi they teach

  • Our students are automatically given free Associate Membership with BBO which gives them free, online access to BBO syllabi materials and resources

  • For the duration of their studies, our Level 4, 5 and 6 students are eligible for the members' rate on selected Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses

All course modules are delivered by industry professionals and are designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need for successful careers in the dance teaching profession. Tutors provide one-to-one support and students have access to all their study materials online.

Level 3 Dance Teaching Assistant Certificate


Our Level 3 Certificate course is ideal for students wishing to become a dance teaching assistant or for students who are already assisting and would like formal recognition of their role. The Level 3 course is also an exciting introduction to dance teaching.


The course is open to all students, regardless of the organisation they have trained or taken examinations with. Gaining the Level 3 Certificate is beneficial to dance schools which can use the qualification to promote their dance teaching assistants’ knowledge and commitment.


The Level 3 Certificate is delivered through a blended approach of guided learning, online learning, and independent study. Students complete observations of dance teaching and other activities under the supervision of their dance teacher at their dance school and receive individual tutor support from BBO Faculty.



The course is for 3-4 months and consists of 3 modules:

Module 3.1 Observation for Teaching

Module 3.2 Frameworks, Policies, and Procedures to Support Teachers

Module 3.3 Devising Dance Training Activities

As part of the course, students are required to observe 15 dance classes taught by qualified dance teachers. Observations should take place at the Host Dance School the student has listed on the application form.

Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirements for our Teaching Qualification courses are below.


Note that syllabus-based dance qualifications can be with any recognised dance awarding organisation and in any dance genre.


For Level 3, the Host Dance School does not have to be a BBO school. We welcome applications from students learning any recognised dance awarding organisation syllabus.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

We offer Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for our Level 4, Level 5 and Level 6 courses. 


If you've already completed dance or dance education studies at the equivalent level of the course you wish to apply for or have equivalent professional experience, you may be exempt from selected modules of study. You can apply for RPL as part of your course application process and RPL applications must be received prior to the start of your course.

Level 3

  • Level 2 dance qualification (e.g. Intermediate Foundation, Grade 4 or BTEC First)

  • Age 14+

  • Must attend a Host Dance School approved by BBO

Level 4

  • GCSE or equivalent in English (C/4)

  • Level 3 dance qualification (e.g. Intermediate, Grade 6, A Level Dance or BTEC National) 

  • Age 17+

Level 5

  • GCSE or equivalent in English (C/4)

  • Level 3 dance qualification (e.g. Intermediate, Grade 6, A Level Dance or BTEC National) 

  • Level 4 teaching qualification or equivalent professional teaching experience or if you are a professional dancer, a minimum of 5 years’ contracted work as a professional dancer

  • Age 18+

Level 6

  • GCSE or equivalent in English (C/4)

  • Level 3 dance qualification (e.g. Intermediate, Grade 6, A Level Dance or BTEC National) 

  • Level 5 teaching qualification or equivalent professional teaching experience 

  • Age 18+
